    Precision Drift Chambers for the Atlas Muon Spectrometer

    ATLAS is a detector under construction to explore the physics at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. It has a muon spectrometer with an excellent momentum resolution of 3-10%, provided by three layers of precision monitored-drift-tube chambers in a toroidal magnetic field. A single drift tube measures a track point with a mean resolution close to 100 micron, even at the expected high neutron and gamma background rates.     Echo of the Quantum Phase Transition of CeCu6−x_{6-x}Aux_x in XPS: Breakdown of Kondo Screening

    We present an X-ray photoemission study of the heavy-fermion system CeCu6−x_{6-x}Aux_x across the magnetic quantum phase transition of this compound at temperatures above the single-ion Kondo temperature TKT_K. In dependence of the Au concentration xx we observe a sudden change of the ff-occupation number nfn_f and the core-hole potential UdfU_{df} at the critical concentration xc=0.1x_c=0.1. We interpret these findings in the framework of the single-impurity Anderson model. Our results are in excellent agreement with findings from earlier UPS measurements %\cite{klein08qpt} and provide further information about the precursors of quantum criticality at elevated temperatures.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; published version, references updated, minor changes in wordin

    High-temperature signatures of quantum criticality in heavy fermion systems

    We propose a new criterion for distinguishing the Hertz-Millis (HM) and the local quantum critical (LQC) mechanism in heavy fermion systems with a magnetic quantum phase transition (QPT). The criterion is based on our finding that the spin screening of Kondo ions can be completely suppressed by the RKKY coupling to the surrounding magnetic ions even without magnetic ordering and that, consequently, the signature of this suppression can be observed in spectroscopic measurements above the magnetic ordering temperature. We apply the criterion to high-resolution photoemission (UPS) measurements on CeCu6−x_{6-x}Aux_{x} and conclude that the QPT in this system is dominated by the LQC scenario.Comment: Inveted paper, International Conference on Magnetism, ICM 2009, Karlsruhe.     Precision drift tube chambers with a sense wire positioning accuracy of better than 20 microns are under construction for the ATLAS muon spectrometer. 70% of the 88 large chambers for the outermost layer of the central part of the spectrometer have been assembled. Measurements during chamber construction of the positions of the sense wires and of the sensors for the optical alignment monitoring system demonstrate that the requirements for the mechanical precision of the chambers are fulfilled

    Switchable lasing in coupled multimode microcavities

    We propose the new concept of a switchable multimode microlaser. As a generic, realistic model of a multimode microresonator a system of two coupled defects in a two-dimensional photonic crystal is considered. We demonstrate theoretically that lasing of the cavity into one selected resonator mode can be caused by injecting an appropriate optical pulse at the onset of laser action (injection seeding). Temporal mode-to-mode switching by re-seeding the cavity after a short cool-down period is demonstrated by direct numerical solution.     Signature of quantum criticality in photoemission spectroscopy at elevated temperature

    A quantum phase transition (QPT) in a heavy-fermion (HF) compound may destroy the Fermi liquid groundstate. However, the conditions for this breakdown have remained obscure. We report the first direct investigation of heavy quasiparticle formation and breakdown in the canonical system CeCu6−x_{6-x}Aux_x by ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy at elevated temperatures without the complications of lattice coherence. Surprisingly, the single-ion Kondo energy scale TKT_K exhibits an abrupt step near the quantum critical Au concentration of xc=0.1x_c=0.1. We show theoretically that this step is expected from a highly non-linear renormalization of the local spin coupling at each Ce site, induced by spin fluctuations on neighboring sites. It provides a general high-temperature indicator for HF quasiparticle breakdown at a QPT.Comment: Published version, PRL, minor changes in wordin

    Scattering of 7^{7}Be and 8^{8}B and the astrophysical S17_{17} factor

    Measurements of scattering of 7^{7}Be at 87 MeV on a melamine (C3_{3}N6 _{6}H6_{6}) target and of 8^{8}B at 95 MeV on C were performed. For 7^{7}Be the angular range was extended over previous measurements and monitoring of the intensity of the radioactive beam was improved. The measurements allowed us to check and improve the optical model potentials used in the incoming and outgoing channels for the analysis of existing data on the proton transfer reaction 14^{14}N(7^{7}Be,8^{8}B)13^{13}C. The resultslead to an updated determination of the asymptotic normalization coefficient for the virtual decay 8^{8}B →\to 7^{7}Be + pp. We find a slightly larger value, Ctot2(8B)=0.466±0.047C_{tot}^{2}(^{8}B)=0.466\pm 0.047 fm−1^{-1}, for the melamine target. This implies an astrophysical factor, S17(0)=18.0±1.8S_{17}(0)=18.0\pm 1.8 eV⋅\cdotb, for the solar neutrino generating reaction 7^{7}Be(pp,γ\gamma )8^{8}B.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
